DIY Mobile Clip for Gamepad/Controller (Easy & Affordable!)

In this videos, I’ll show you how to create a mobile clip or phone bracket for almost any gamepad or controller using just two readily available accessories. This isn’t a full DIY tutorial in the sense that you’ll need to purchase the items, but it’s a simple and effective solution.

Here’s the setup for one of the mobile clips using the Cosmic Byte Strata Xenon Gamepad. Since there aren’t any dedicated mobile clips for this gamepad, I created my own.

What you’ll need:

  1. Gamepad/Controller: (e.g., Cosmic Byte Strata Xenon)
  2. Multi-Purpose Foldable Mobile Phone Holder: This adjustable holder is incredibly versatile and durable. It can be folded and rotated to your liking. The stretchable bracket easily fits phones up to 9cm (3.5 inches) wide and has a smooth interior lining to protect your phone. It’s also portable and collapsible.
  3. Heavy-Duty 18-inch Cable Zip Ties: These provide a sturdy and surprisingly neat solution.

(Direct purchase links for all products are in the description below.)

Three Ways to Use the Phone Holder:

  1. Clamped to a Table: Clamp the holder to a table or similar surface for hands-free gaming. Good, but not ideal for our purpose.
  2. Attached Directly to the Gamepad (Method 1): While this works, it puts constant pressure on the gamepad’s trackpad and isn’t very secure. The holder could easily slide off.
  3. Attached Directly to the Gamepad (Method 2 – The Best Solution): This method provides a similar setup to the second, but without the pressure on the trackpad and with much greater stability.

How to Assemble the Mobile Clip:

You’ll likely only need two zip ties, but you can use more if desired.

  1. Insert the zip ties through the back of the phone holder.
  2. Position the controller in front of the holder.
  3. Connect and tighten the zip ties in a criss-cross pattern, ensuring the headphone jack remains accessible.
  4. Cut off the excess zip tie plastic with a cutter or scissors.

Finished Product:

All buttons on the front and back of the gamepad remain accessible. The turbo button (below the home button) is slightly less visible but still easily pressed. The zip ties securely hold the bracket in place. My phone weighs about 281g with the case, and the holder supports it without any issues.

Limitations:

The only limitation with this setup is that the gamepad’s charging port (located at the rear) is blocked. This may not be an issue for all controllers. However, zip ties are inexpensive and easily replaceable, which is why I bought a 100-pack.

Final Thoughts:

This DIY mobile clip is a fantastic and affordable solution. I’ll continue using this setup until I find a permanent solution. Let me know what you think in the comments!
