Rediscovering My Childhood: The Original Game Boy and its Games!

Hey everyone, Harry here! I’m incredibly excited today because after 24 years, I’ve finally found my very first handheld gaming device – my beloved Game Boy! Yes, you heard that right, 24 years! I’d almost given up hope, but there it was, tucked away in a box, a relic of my childhood. I’m so stoked to share this nostalgic treasure with you all.

This is the original Game Boy hard plastic carrying case, and inside, I found not only the console itself but also four game cartridges. Plus, I unearthed six more! Let’s take a closer look.

As you can see, this Game Boy has definitely seen better days. The screen has unfortunately suffered some burn-in, likely from excessive heat. That’ll definitely need replacing. Other than that, the console is in surprisingly excellent condition. There are barely any scratches, just a few minor ones on the buttons. Even the serial number on the back is still visible. The buttons are still clicky, and the D-pad feels fantastic! It’s incredibly clean, probably because I gave it a good clean before packing it away all those years ago (though I honestly don’t remember!).

This brings back so many memories! I used to play this thing for hours every day, mostly outdoors since, unlike today’s backlit handhelds like the Nintendo Switch, the original Game Boy needed ambient light to see the screen. Crazy how technology has changed! I bought this particular Game Boy in Japan in 1998, just before I left the country. You can even see “DMG-01” printed on it.

Now, let’s check out the games!

  • Michael Jordan: All-Star Challenge Basketball: I remember playing basketball all the time back in Japan, both at school and on the playground, and this game was a perfect digital companion. It’s a bit dusty, though; I’ll need to clean it before trying it out.

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: This game was tough! I spent countless hours trying to beat it. It even has some Japanese writing on it. Super dusty, too!

  • Super Donkey Kong GB: Remember yellow Game Boy cartridges? This was my absolute favorite game! I played it even more than the basketball game. I was so curious about what was inside as a kid that I actually tried to open it, resulting in a scratch and a lost screw.

  • Pokémon Blue: Ah, Pokémon Blue! I poured at least 150 hours into this game. While most of my friends had Pokémon Red, I wanted something different. (Charizard was cool and all, but I was tired of seeing it!). I even have my handwritten notes for the game – TMs, HMs, Pokémon to catch, and how much in-game money I needed! My handwriting hasn’t improved much since then, haha.

Now for the other six games:

  • Baseball: Baseball and basketball were the sports back then. I think this game even had a two-player mode using a link cable.

  • Tetris: Who hasn’t played Tetris? I wasn’t a huge fan, but I’d play it when I was bored with other games.

  • Double Dragon 3: I honestly don’t remember playing this one at all. I’ll have to give it a try and see if it jogs my memory.

  • Pipe Dream: This was fun for a while, but it got boring pretty quickly.

  • 31-in-1 (Bootleg): This is the only fake cartridge in the bunch. The sticker came off, and I made a rather poor replacement. It even says “Game” instead of “Nintendo Game Boy.” It’s a dark gray, unlike the official cartridges. I think it had Super Mario, Dr. Mario, and Space Invaders on it, but I can’t remember the other games.

  • Mario Baseball: This was another baseball game, but with Mario! I preferred the other baseball game, though. I mainly bought this one because of the sticker.

These games are so precious to me. This Game Boy was my first handheld console. I also had a Super Famicom (the Super Nintendo Entertainment System), but that’s still hiding somewhere in my house.

Unfortunately, when I tried to play these games, I discovered a major problem: the Game Boy won’t power on! So, I need to replace not only the screen but also figure out what’s wrong internally. Since there’s no Nintendo in India, I’ll have to rely on online retailers for parts. Sadly, AliExpress is currently banned in India, so I might have to wait a while or even import parts from the US, which could be expensive.

As soon as I get the parts, I’ll make a follow-up video showing gameplay on this beautiful console.

In the meantime, I’m starting a new series on my channel focusing on games from various consoles like Nintendo, Sega, and PlayStation, including the Nintendo Switch. So, if you’re interested in retro gaming, subscribe to my channel! And if you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up! It really helps the channel.

Thanks for watching, and I’ll catch you in the next video!
